Exploring the natural beauty that surrounds Palatine is one of the best ways to stay active, whether it’s by walking, biking, or birdwatching. Luckily, you can find well-maintained hiking trails and stunning views within just 15 minutes of The Clayson. Here are three great spots for enjoying outdoor exercise near our Palatine apartments.
Deer Grove Forest Preserve Trails
Enjoy almost 10 scenic miles ideal for hiking or biking, divided into two sections with both paved paths and natural dirt trails. The east side of Palatine’s Deer Grove Forest Preserve features wetlands, a lake, and wide-open fields. Head west to explore dense forests and the chance to spot white-tailed deer. This beautiful spot immerses you in nature with moderately challenging terrain. We recommend bringing bug spray!
Crabtree Nature Center Trails
This local educational resource covers 112 acres of protected land full of wildflowers, birds, and birch trees. While the center itself is currently closed, you can still take an enjoyable walk on its three miles of well-maintained, unpaved trails. The paths are relatively flat and ideal for hikers and bikers of every level. Travel across woods, prairies, and wetlands. You can also stop by the picturesque Crabtree Lake to see turtles and spring peeper frogs.
Paul Douglas Forest Preserve Trail
The Paul Douglas Forest Preserve is 1,800 acres of lush forests, restored wetlands, and open grasslands. This seven-mile paved loop trail is a peaceful destination for running, walking, and hiking. The path winds through an incredible variety of settings with beautiful scenery to explore, including spacious Grassy Ridge Meadow and many bird habitats. Dogs are welcome on the trail too as long as they stay on a leash.Back to all posts
